In 1925, the Overseas Service League conceived a memorial grove of trees and a flagstaff in Central Park — a tribute to American women who served and died overseas in World War One. Trees were planted beginning in 1926. Today, this living memorial stretches along the Fifth Avenue wall from 69th to 72nd Streets — almost lost to history, yet thriving. It remains the only memorial in Manhattan to honor women veterans. Since 2019, Friends of the NYC Women’s Veterans Grove has revived annual tribute ceremonies at this sacred site. Our mission is to recognize and help preserve the Grove as a place of national historic significance and to honor women in service to America.
